Organisation and Scientific Committee

The Euro summer school in Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions 2002 is part of a series of summer schools in Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions. The first of this series was the school in Laredo, Spain, in 2000, the second Summer School on Orthogonal Polynomials, Harmonic Analysis, Approximation and Applications, September 17 - 21, 2001 at Inzell, Germany. In 2003 the school is planned for Coimbra, Portugal, from July 14-26, 2003 (contact Amilcar Branquinho).

Objectives, Goals, History and Future

The unifying topic of this summer school is `Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions' (OP-SF). This topic has a very rich history, going back to 19th century when mathematicians and physicists tried to solve the most important differential equations of mathematical physics. Since then OP-SF has developed to a standard subject within mathematics, which is driven by applications. The applications are numerous, both within mathematics (e.g. statistics, combinatorics, harmonic analysis, number theory) and other sciences, such as physics, biology, computer science, chemistry. Over the last two decades the subject of OP-SF has blossomed enormously due to the interactions with these disciplines.

The summer school is primarily intended for graduate students or post-docs that have recently obtained a PhD-degree in mathematics, physics or computer science. However, everybody interested in the subject is welcome to attend the summer school. The main goals of this summer school are

The 2002 summer school in Orthogonal Polynomials is to be considered as one of a series on summer schools on these subjects. Previous summer schools have taken place in 2000 (Laredo, Spain), and 2001 (Inzell, Germany). In 2003 the school is planned for Coimbra, Portugal, from July 14-26, 2003 (contact Amilcar Branquinho).

Programme, registration and poster session

The programme for the Summer School lasts from Monday, August 12, 9.30, until Friday, August 16, 18.30. The detailed programme is available as post-script file and as pdf-file.

The registration desk will be open on Sunday, August 11, from 14.00-20.00. The keys for the student residences can be obtained from the registration desk as well. The registration desk will be located at the Campus Arenberg III Celestijnenlaan 200B (the mathematics department). (How to get there: see travel.) If you have reserved lodging in the student residence, then you can pick up your key (and directions) at the registration desk. In case you arrive earlier than Sunday August 11, you will be given separate instructions of how to pick up the key.

Participants are encouraged to present their results in a poster session. The posters will be available during the whole week. There are no scheduled talks by participants.

Location, Accomodation, Travel, Social Programme

LOCATION All lectures and classes will take place at Campus Arenberg III of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Click here for a map of the campus.

ACCOMODATION Participants will be accomodated in student residence buildings (see map). Breakfast and lunch will be taken at the university cafetaria (see map) Lecturers will be accomodated in university guest houses. For other accomodation (hotels) in Leuven, see e.g. Hotel La Royale (approx. 50 euro per night for single room) or Hotel Binnenhof(approx. 100 euro per night for single room), or a general list of hotels in Leuven.

TRAVEL Leuven can easily be reached by car (close to the highway), train (major railway station between Brussels Airport Zaventem and Köln) (use Zaventem (Airport) and Leuven as entry in timetables; train trip takes about 1 hour), plane (20 km from Brussels International Airport). Click here for a map showing how to get to Leuven, where you can also find maps of Leuven, and the campus. To get from the railway station to the campus take the bus. There is a bus from the Leuven railway station to this campus: bus 2 (CAMPUS) which leaves from platform 6 of the bus terminal at the Leuven railway station. Be sure to take bus 2 with CAMPUS mentioned explicitly, since not every bus 2 takes you all the way to the campus. The terminus (final stop) of the bus is on the campus (see map), where signs will lead you to the registration desk. On Sunday there will be one bus every hour, which leaves at 6 minutes before the hour. The bus trip takes about 20 minutes and costs 1 euro. On weekdays and on Saturday there are two busses every hour leaving at 3 minutes past the hour and 33 minutes past the hour.)

SOCIAL PROGRAMME There is no official social programme scheduled for the summer school, but on August 13-14-15 there are rock concerts in the city centre. Most of them are free, and some cost 10euro. See Markt rock.
